In the hazardous space of cargo handling, a large shipping company sought better understanding of their safety risks as a component of their larger enterprise risk inventory. With a personalized risk assessment, current safety initiatives and attitudes of employees were examined, as were loss events and insurance claims due to injuries and deaths. Cause-Effect analysis, Root Cause Analysis, and process analysis were key tools in the process of identifying three top-level risks and nine action plans for controlling them. The consultant helped the organization manage the action plans to completion by providing coaching and augmentation. After nine months, safety incidents dropped to the lowest levels ever seen by the organization and employee engagement with safety was at an all-time high. This led to a re-evaluation of insurance premiums, and, over time, the organization experienced lower insurance costs as well as a reduction in serious injuries and deaths.
